During a seminar on “Present status and future plan for magnetic Materials and device industries”, held on 10th & 11th August 1973 at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad, the learned participants, under the initiative of Late. Dr. R. V. Tamahankar, deliberated upon establishing a “National Forum” exclusively for Magnetics. A decision was then reached to form a technical society meant for professionals, academicians, researchers, manufacturers and users in the field of Magnetics.  After formulating the rules & regulations, the “Magnetics Society of India” as a registered professional body came into existence on the 3rd Nov. 1973 at Hyderabad with its office located in the premise of DMRL, Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad-500 058.

The new born society, comprising about 30 members with financial support of about Rs.15,000/-, had started functioning under the able guidance of Late. Dr.R.V.Tamhankar – the founder president of the Society. The main objective of MSI, among several others, is to bring together all those who work in the field of Magnetics, to a common forum for dissemination of technical information, sharing of technical facilities, assessing the technical needs of industries and promoting a strong interaction among academicians, technocrats and entrepreneurs. Towards this objective, the society embarked upon itself to conduct National Seminars on Magnetics at important places of interest on the subject. In the recent past, it joined hands with other technical societies, institutes, laboratories to organize its technical conferences/seminar to widen the scope of multi-disciplinary nature of the diversifying subject and bring in broader technical interactions.

Apart from conducting seminars/conferences, the society also brings out a bi-annual publication, which was titled “MSI News Letter” in the early years and presently appearing as “MSI Bulletin”, to keep the members and other readers informed about the latest developments in magnetism and magnetic materials.

The strength of any technical society lies in its members drawn from various disciplines, such as pure and applied research, manufacturing, testing, designing and fabrication of systems, marketing, market forecasting etc. Currently, the society derives its strength from nearly 50 Patron member (Company membership) and about 500 Life members.
